A New Summer Adventure- Backyard Home Theater!!

15 May 2012 Categories: News

There is nothing more exciting than having an outdoor home theatre in your backyard. With growing prices of gas and theme park tickets, it is better to have some adventure in your own backyard. You can combine your regular summer activities like pool parties and BBQs with your own outdoor home theatre system. It would take just a little labor and some resourcefulness and you can set up your own backyard hometheatre system.

First of all what you will need is a screen. You can purchase a 100 inch readymade portable screen or you can make your own home made screen. To make your home made screen all you need is a king size white bed spread. This can be used as your movie screen. A readymade screen will be a better option as you can get a better image, on a more reflective surface. But it will add to your total cost. If you are planning for a readymade screen then buy a screen bigger than what you think you need. That will give you more space to adjust the image and the video projector distance.

Then you need a good place for your screen. If you are using the bed spread screen, then you can hang it on the wall or clothes line. But readymade screens come with a tripod stand. But you have to make sure that it has enough ground space to stand on. But if you are using a bed spread screen, then you’ll have to fasten it properly on to the stand or frame so that it does not flap in the breeze. You will also need duct tape, hooks and other materials to fasten your screen.  If you plan to mount your screen on the wall then make sure that you have enough
space on the wall to insert the hooks and other holding materials.

Then you need a good movie projector to watch your favorite movie on your backyard screen. Movie projectors used to be expensive and used only for business presentations and commercial entertainment. But nowadays it has become more available and affordable for everyone. They have become less expensive. There are many types of projectors available in the market. But an LCD projector would be a better option. It provides bright and better image at reasonable prices.

To select the best position for your projector, you have to adjust it by yourself. Select a position where you get the best image. You will need a Blu-ray disc player for the best viewing experience. Place your screen in a place where the lighting is perfect for a good viewing experience. Make a storage space in your house or in your backyard to store the essential components and to store the screen, projector and speakers after watching the movie. Place your screen and other components of your outdoor theatre away from your pool or BBQ grill, as the heat or humidity can affect them.

Before you begin the movie night, invite your neighbors and make sure that you have the right movie for a family audience. Store sufficient food for everyone in the storage space, as food is the most essential part of a movie.

Media Browser Version 2.5.3 (Apollo SP1) Released

Media Browser Version 2.5.3 (Apollo SP1) Released

Version 2.5.3 of Media Browser is now available on the main Download page.

Not much in the way of features in this release but some important bug fixes including:

  • Fix for last added lists containing TV outside of the normal file structure
  • Podcasts now show in last added lists properly
  • JIL and sorting should now work better with non-alpha characters and indexes
  • Fix for some memory leaks in the service
  • You can now index a folder by the official certification (MPAA rating)

The complete list is here

Additionally, this version will migrate all your plug-ins to the plugins directory. No more ‘pgn’ files and putting our theme dlls in ehome. This should be fairly transparent but, if you get an error during the install related to this migration you will just need to re-install your theme plug-ins via the configurator. All settings should be retained.

I just installed this version of Media Browser and a fresh install of windows 7 and let me say this is the FASTEST and most stable version of Media Browser yet.

It is time for spring cleaning and now is a good time to clean your PC as well. If you can it is a good idea to reformat your PC every now and then and start fresh. Take the time and do this now and install the latest version of Media Browser. I highly recommend it.

Media Browser Version 2.5 (Hydra) Is Here

Media Browser Version 2.5 (Hydra) Is Here

The guys responsible for Media Browser just released a new version of the software (codename Hydra). Some of the significant changes/fixes as mentioned on their website are highlighted below: [...]

Highlights:

  • The biggest change in Hydra is something that should be completely transparent to the user but should yield performance improvements and provides us with some great capabilities going forward. It is that we now use a SQL database for our cache. This means the old “ExperimentalSQLite” option in the config is now defunct as all systems will use SQL.
  • Several other internal improvements have been made that should mean MB is more responsive and reliable for everyone.
  • MB can now recover from your network shares not being available without causing all your metadata to “disappear”. It is still basically designed to operate on available media but you should no longer have the issue of your whole library being deleted and re-added just because you brought it up when your server was not available.
  • The context menu system can now support sub-menus. This will allow plug-ins to better organize their options within the context menu.
  • MB now has screen saver functionality. There is a built-in default saver and more can be added via plug-ins.
  • The recent added/watched lists now “roll-up” TV episodes into series groupings so, if you add 30 episodes from a single series at once, it won’t take over the whole list.
  • Showing the splash screen before an external player has been split as a separate option from the minimize one. Also, you can define your own splash by putting the appropriate image in the IBN/General folder as “splash.png” (only png supported).
  • A number of issues with backdrops not being properly inherited for TV on the recent lists and in index views have been addressed.
  • The imagecache should shrink in size as we have changed how we are handling it as well.

In particular the first three items are what interest me the most. Any time you can improve performance (without hopefully sacrificing stability), I always welcome that.

You can download the latest release here, and if you do give a whirl feel free  to post back here with your initial thoughts.

Video Podcasts, The Wave of The Future

Podcasts are an amazing way for cord cutters to get up to date info instead of broadcast news or TV shows. Thanks to the HammerDD HTPCs, bringing them into the living room is a piece of cake.

[...]

What is a ‘video podcast’?

Starting out as a means to embed media in an RSS feed in 2004, podcasts originally automated the distribution of audio to desktops and portable music players via subscriptions. As podcasters (individuals who make and distribute podcasts) have transitioned from audio to video, production companies have entered the field. New content providers like Revision3 and TWiT TV are now competing directly with established networks like NPR, Discovery, and the BBC. Eventually, video podcasts could have the potential to be just as big as a living room content vector as YouTube, Netflix  or even cable.

Accessing video podcasts directly from your HammerDD HTPC.

With the purchase of every new HammerDD HTPC it comes pre-installed with some of the best podcasts ready to go. You can always add new ones or delete the pre-installed ones by following the easy to follow guide that also comes with your HammerDH HTPC.

Streaming for the Masses

Streaming for the Masses

Streaming video has gone mainstream. Are you ready?

Once upon a time, outside factors controlled when and where you could watch a TV show or feature film. Over the past 35 years, that’s evolved dramatically. [...]

The revolution began with the introduction of the VCR in 1976. Its ability to record and archive broadcast TV shows and movies on magnetic tape burst open the floodgates for entertainment in the home. Other formats followed, all the way up to our present-day high-density Blu-ray Discs. One thing they’ve all had in common, though, is their physical nature. That’s all changing now. Like it or not, we’re entering a transition phase from physical media to streaming and the cloud. Looks like a revolution all over again.

If you’re new to streaming, you probably have a boatload of questions about what you’ll need to get started, such as which equipment and connections to use and who to choose as your provider (or providers). Don’t worry; we’ve got the answers for you. Feel free to Contact Us and ask any question you may have.

[...]

In a recent article in “The New York Times” writer Nick Bilton says;

It has now been a couple of years since I cut my cable and began exclusively watching Internet video on my home television. I still feel that it was one of the wiser decisions I’ve made with technology, saving me hundreds of dollars a year and countless headaches dealing with a cable company.
